Asperger's Disorder is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder. Both Asperger's and Autistic Disorder are in subgroups of a larger category called Pervasive Developmental Disorders. This disorder ranges from mild to severe.
Some Symptoms of Asperger's Disorder
Affected individuals are characterized by social isolation and eccentric behavior in childhood. Other symptoms may include:
Speech may sound peculiar due to abnormalities in inflection and a repetitive pattern
Clumsiness in articulation and gross motor behavior
May have a special area of interest such as cars, trains, French literature, door knobs, hinges, mechanical workings of machines, cappuccino, meteorology, astronomy or history
Crave routine and sameness. May have obsessive routines
Appears lost in their own world
Physical self-stimulation
Difficulty reading social cues
Don’t seem to understand appropriate social boundaries
May be oversensitive to sounds, lights, tastes, smells
May prefer certain soft clothing
Prefers certain food
Vocabularies may be extraordinarily rich and children sound like "little professors"
At younger ages may appear very rigid
As adults they may be seen as brilliant, eccentric, absent minded, socially inept, and a little awkward physically
