What is Neuropsychological Testing?

Neuropsychology is a professional specialty concerned with learning and behavior in relationship to a person’s brain.

Testing may be requested by another professional for problems such as:

• Difficulty in learning, attention, behavior, socialization, or emotional control;
• A disease or inborn developmental problem that affects the brain in some way; or
• A brain injury from an accident, birth trauma, or other physical stress.

A neuropsychological evaluation assists in better understanding a persons functioning in areas such as memory, attention, perception, coordination, language, and personality.

Neurological testing is conducted to look at learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders.

What is Assessed?

The following areas may be tested:

• General intelligence
• Achievement skills such as reading, math, spelling, writing
• Executive skills, such as organization, planning, inhibition, and flexibility
• Attention
• Learning and memory
• Language
• Visual-spatial skills
• Motor coordination
• Behavioral and emotional functioning
• Social skills
  

A detailed development history is taken.

What is Psychological Testing?

Psychological testing is conducted to look at emotional disorders such as depression, bi-polar disorder (manic-depression), anxiety, stress, suicide potential, schizophrenia, other psychotic disorders and mental health disorders. Many different tests are used to help pinpoint a diagnosis so a better treatment plan can be set up and appropriate medications can be prescribed if needed.

Psychological testing can also be beneficial in employment situations and training to see where one's personality may best be utilized.
